It has come up that it is possible that he received a gold medal as the third goalie at the 1998 Calgary Olympics. eliteprospects claims it to be true, but the IIHF guide and record book does not list him on the roster. The official report from the LA84 foundation lists him on page 657 as part of the the Soviet delegation though (spelled Evgueni Belocheikine). I can't find him in the Olympics.com database but I was wondering if anyone has an official source that would corroborate the eliteprospects claim, I don't know if the LA84 reference confirms him as a medalist or not.18abruce (talk) 00:55, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- Olympedia has him as part of the team, but that he did not play, and did not win a medal. This would be in line with the Olympics still being cryptic as to how many non-starters in team sports get medals. Profile, list of Olympians Who Won a Medal at the World Ice Hockey Championships. I can get in touch with Olympedia for their research on the matter to see what sources might be out there. Kingsif (talk) 00:20, 17 February 2025 (UTC)
- Before the Salt Lake City Olympics the rule was that you have to be physically on the field of play at some point in at least one game before you would be eligible for a medal (see the 1988 men's field hockey final for a perfect example). In 2002 that changed and anybody on the team roster became eligible whether they played or not. Having said that, this rule wasn't always followed as Steve Janaszak wasn't eligible for a gold medal in 1980 but was awarded one anyway. Topcardi (talk) 13:35, 17 February 2025 (UTC)
- And there is the Khabibulin mess in 1992 where it is believed that Tikhonov took a gold medal that should have gone to him, inspite of being a 3rd goalie who did not play.18abruce (talk) 15:41, 17 February 2025 (UTC)

- It appears to be a matter of dispute, opinions on the matter could be brought to the talk page here.18abruce (talk) 01:15, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- @18abruce:, do you mean 1988, rather than 1998? GoodDay (talk) 14:59, 2 March 2025 (UTC)

Doing research on Olympians
[edit]Hi, I want to improve the some of the vast amount of Olympian stubs by extending them. My question is about finding sources. Take for example, a typical Olympian stub. Say, Robert Oliver (cyclist).
Looking through newspaper archives in New Zealand yields nothing. Looking through newspapers.com in New Zealand yields nothing relevant (my query was "Robert Oliver" "Olympics") On Google, I get this nice, detailed article. [1] Olympedia has no biographical information like a blurb. ProQuest only repeats the previous results. I can't seem to find anything relevant on Google Books.
In total, I have one secondary source. My target is to reach DYK status, and a meager single source is not enough for DYK. What avenues are there that I have not exhausted, from somebody with access to the Wikipedia Library? I have great difficulty finding good coverage, which I believe is out there somewhere in all likelihood. Cheers, -1ctinus📝🗨 02:24, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- Well, you have access to the Wikipedia Library, too, 1ctinus. You just have to ask for it.
- As you are asking about a New Zealander, there is exactly one newspaper online post-1951 (if you exclude the Auckland Mana in 1977–78), and that is The Press. Searching for "Oliver" and "pursuit" restricted to 1972 yields 36 results. You can quickly see that he was from Wellington. Have a read, and see whether adjacent years yield more. Schwede66 03:35, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- And if you just throw his name into Google, you get some contemporary reporting:
- Schwede66 03:38, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- And he's posting old newspaper articles about himself on his Facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=4377493075642571 Schwede66 03:40, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you! I did not know about papers past. I have access to the wikipedia library, so that’s why i mentioned using newspapers.com and newspapers archive. I guess i have to be more creative when it comes to non american athletes. Thank you. -1ctinus📝🗨 11:52, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- One further thought. The editor doing most work on New Zealand cyclists is User:Paulpat99 (sorry, the username had previously escaped me). Hence, you could collaborate with him, 1ctinus. Schwede66 22:29, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, yes I could help out. However, one small query is it a COI as we both have ridden for the same cycling club at a time in the past and I have used his former business to service my bike. I am not friends with him but know each-other through the ways mentioned.
- I am a little inactive these days but am happy to assist as needed. Paulpat99 (talk) 05:56, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding, Paulpat99. The personal threshold that I use for COI is such: if I met this person in the street, would they greet me by name and stop for a chat? If yes, it's probably a COI. If you want to adopt that way of thinking, you could still help either through digging up sources, or making suggestions on the article's talk page that 1ctinus (or any other editor) can adopt or adjust as they see fit. Good Articles
[edit]Hi everyone, I have multiple (currently about 3) article that are about the Olympics at Good Article Nominations, if anyone would like to review them, please do. I am also very close to getting a good topic on South Sudan at the Olympics but just need South Sudan National Olympic Committee to be passed. If at all possible please review that one first.
